[ 영어 면접 ] 행동기반 질문(Behavioral Questions) 준비하기

 

나는 요즘 이직을 위해서 계속 면접 준비를 하는 중이다. 실제로 면접을 몇 번 보기도 했는데, 그때마다 영어의 벽도 느끼고 또 연습을 반복하면 더 나아질 수도 있겠다는 생각도 들었다. 그래서 오늘은 면접에 아주 자주 나오는 나오는 질문들과 대답하는 방법에 대해 적어보려 한다. 

 

행동기반 질문(Behavioral Questions)

행동기반 질문은 면접에서 지원자의 과거 행동과 경험을 통해 그들의 직무 수행 능력과 잠재력을 평가하기 위해 사용되는 질문 유형이다. 이러한 질문은 지원자가 실제로 어떤 상황에서 어떻게 행동했는지를 통해 그들의 기술, 능력, 태도, 가치를 이해하려는데 목적을 둔다. 

 

행동기반 질문 답변 방법

이런 행동기반 질문은 보통 S(Situation: 상황), T(Task: 과제), A(Action: 행동), R(Result: 결과)를 기반으로 이뤄진다. 내가 컬리지를 다닐 때에도 Communication관련 수업에서 S.T.A.R으로 대답하는 연습을 했었는데, 실제로 굉장히 많이 사용되고 유용한 방법 같다. 어떤 질문이 있더라도 이와 비슷한 구조로 대답하면 금방 모범답안이 될 수 있기 때문이다.

 

S.T.A.R. 기법 답변 구조

1. Situation (상황): 답변을 시작하기 전에, 관련된 구체적인 사건이나 프로젝트, 그리고 그 상황의 배경을 설명한다. 상황을 명확하게 설명함으로써, 면접관은 그 상황에서 당신의 역할을 알려주는 부분이다.

2. Task (과제): 그 상황에서 주어진 특정한 과제나 책임을 설명하는 부분이다. 당시 주어진 문제와 과제를 분명히 해 그 상황에서의 '나'의 역할을 명확하게 드러낼 수 있다.

3. Action (행동): 문제 해결을 위해 취한 구체적인 조치들을 말하는 부분이다. 이 단계는 당신의 문제 해결 능력, 리더십, 팀워크, 커뮤니케이션 기술 등을 보여주는 중요한 부분이 된다. 어떤 결정을 내렸으며, 어떤 전략이나 기술을 사용했는지를 포함시키는 것이 중요하다.

4. Result (결과): 내가 문제해결을 위해 취한 행동이 어떤 결과로 이어졌는지를 설명하는 부분이다. 성공적인 결과는 물론, 결과로 인해 배운 교훈이나 그 경험이 어떻게 당신의 전문성을 발전시켰는지를 포함할 수 있다. 만약 수치로 드러낼 수 있는 결과가 있다면 이때 이야기하면 좋다.

 

영어 면접에서 자주 등장하는 행동기반 예상 질문 TOP 5

1. Describe a time when you had to work under pressure. 
2. Give an example of a goal you reached and tell me how you achieved it.
3. Tell me about a time you made a mistake. How did you handle it?
4. Can you describe a situation where you had to deal with a difficult colleague?
5. Explain a situation where you went above and beyond your job duties.

위에서 볼 수 있듯 특정 상황에 어떠한 행동이나 해결점을 찾았는지를 묻는 질문들이 주를 이룬다.

위의 Top 5 질문을 STAR기법을 이용해 답하면 아래와 같다.

1. Describe a time when you had to work under pressure.

• Situation: Last year, my marketing team faced the challenge of launching a major advertising campaign in just one month.
• Task: As the team leader, my role was to ensure the campaign was ready on time despite the tight schedule.
• Action: I prioritized the campaign elements, set daily targets, and held brief daily meetings to ensure all team members were aligned and on track.
• Result: We successfully launched the campaign on schedule and it resulted in a 30% increase in web traffic and a 20% rise in product sales compared to the previous quarter, significantly surpassing our initial goals.

2. Give an example of a goal you reached and tell me how you achieved it.

• Situation: At my company, we were given the goal of acquiring 100 new clients by the end of the year.
• Task: As the sales team manager, it was my job to devise and implement a strategy to meet this target.
• Action: Together with my team, we conducted a market analysis and designed a tailored marketing campaign. We also introduced an incentive program to motivate the team and regularly reviewed our performance.
• Result: Our efforts paid off, and we managed to secure 120 new clients well before the deadline, significantly contributing to the company's overall annual targets. I received an award for Outstanding Team Leader for these achievements.

3. Tell me about a time you made a mistake. How did you handle it?

• Situation: In one project, I inaccurately analyzed critical data, which resulted in errors in the report.
• Task: Upon discovering the error, it was crucial to rectify the mistake quickly and restore trust.
• Action: I immediately informed my supervisor and the client, apologizing for the oversight. I reviewed the data again, corrected the report, and resubmitted it with the accurate information.
• Result: My corrective actions were appreciated by the client, who understood and forgave the mistake, trusting my commitment to careful work moving forward. This incident taught me the importance of owning up to errors and proactively resolving them.

4. Can you describe a situation where you had to deal with a difficult colleague?

• Situation: At a previous job, I was assigned a project with a colleague who was notoriously difficult to collaborate with.
• Task: For the success of the project, it was imperative to improve our working relationship and cooperate effectively.
• Action: I initiated one-on-one discussions with the colleague to share feedback and understand each other's perspectives. I also proposed a clear delineation of tasks that played to each of our strengths.
• Result: These efforts helped us overcome our differences and successfully complete the project. This experience taught me valuable lessons in cooperating effectively even with challenging personalities.

5. Explain a situation where you went above and beyond your job duties.

• Situation: My company was experiencing a sudden staff shortage, which threatened to delay a critical project.
• Task: To meet the project's timeline, additional tasks needed to be handled promptly.
• Action: I volunteered to work over weekends and evenings to manage the extra workload and also supported my team members in coping with the situation.
• Result: My efforts ensured the project was completed on time, preventing significant losses for the company. My dedication and teamwork were highly praised, enhancing team morale and my reputation within the company.

 

위와 같은 식으로 답변을 구조화해서 준비하면, 안 그래도 긴장되는 영어면접에 도움이 많이 된다. 나는 미리 예상문제들을 쭉 뽑아놓고 스크립트를 써보기도 했다. 다음엔 다른 예상 문제들과 다양한 질문에 쓸 수 있는 답변을 정리하는 방법에 대해 써봐야겠다. 나처럼 해외취업 면접을 준비 중인 사람들에게 도움이 되길 바라본다. 나도 다음 2차 면접을 무사히 끝내서 이직을 성공하고 싶다!
